Below you will find the number of data centers in each state as well as all of the opposing Facebook groups that we could find (Clickability is currently in process). The number of data centers varies by source and also by which facilities can actually be classified as a data center.
Most of the existing operational facilities are on the smaller side while most of the ones which are being planned are large-scale or hyperscale facilities which are much more draining on resources and harmful to the environment and to our health. We must act NOW while these large-scale facilities are still in the planning stage. Petitions, Protests, and Moratoriums ARE making a difference. Don’t let up!
12+ states and 100 local governments have proposed moratoriums to halt construction due to concerns over energy grid strain, water consumption, and land use. Some are listed here, but most are not. In other places, massive corporations are paying off local governments and commission boards in order to build as quickly and quietly as possible. If this is happening in your area, SPEAK UP. It’s time for us to come together and ACT. Opposition groups ARE making a difference. These plans CAN be stopped at any stage of development, and existing facilities CAN be shut down.
In order for this to happen, we must organize and coordinate. If you create a New Statewide or Local Facebook group for your area or if you find one that we missed, please notify us using the form at the bottom of this page so we can add it to the list below. Also, please do not hesitate to share information in local city, county, and community groups which have nothing to do with data centers in order to spread awareness and gather support.
If you are feeling hesitant to act, please ask yourself, “If I don’t step up, then who will?” May YOU the one to step up for your community, city, county, or state so that many others may follow. Nationwide Protests begin this Saturday. Let’s get it together for the future of our planet!
