Special Protest at the Utah State Capitol this Saturday: STOP the 40,000 acre Stratos Project

This holiday weekend between Nationwide Peaceful Protests is all about Utah. What happens in Box Elder County sets a precedent for the nation. Here are the facts:

- The Stratos Project is backed by celebrity investor Kevin “Shark Tank” O’Leary with endorsements from the Utah Governer’s Office. Acknowledged uses are for AI, Advanced Cloud Computing, and military & defense purposes.

- Water Use is the primary concern. With Utah facing a severe drought, estimates of water use range from 165,000 to 5 MILLION gallons of water a day depending on the server load and cooling needs of the proposed Stratos project.

- Energy use is estimated to be 9 GW (9 Billion Watts) which will double the entire state of Utah’s peak energy demand, generating up to 34 million metric tons of Carbon Dioxide a year.

- Electrical demand plus waste heat is expected to release 16 GW of thermal energy into the surrounding environment, raising temperatures from 2° to 5°F in the daytime and 8° to 12°F at nighttime.

- All of these factors stress an already stressed environment, further deplete the already depleted Great Salt Lake Watershed, and have highly detrimental effects upon local wildlife AND human populations.

- While it is true that the Stratos project withdrew their water rights from Bar H Ranch following public opposition, they did it mostly to skirt the 4,000 formal protests that they received. Bar H’s representative said that they plan to refile at a later date.

The next public protest against this monstrosity is happening at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City this Saturday, May 23, at 11am Mountain Time. Be there if you can!
